From the Hospitality Committee ?

The Committee has planned many events that will showcase our Canadian culture throughout Congress.

Gala Dinner

In our Maritime provinces, commonly known as ?Down East,? there is a tradition of people gathering in kitchens with instruments such as, fiddles, guitars and even spoons to have an evening of song and dance. Our Gala will be transformed to welcome you to a Down East Kitchen Party! Be prepared to participate in a jig, step dancing, spoon playing, and maybe even kissing a cod and getting screeched in!

School Visits

Be sure to sign up to join us on January 11th to tour local schools and see our students, staff and community partners in action! Ottawa is home to school boards, universities and colleges and we trust the tour will give you insights into our provincial educational system. After the tour, you may opt to return to the hotel or join us for skating or sleigh rides at Dow?s Lake (below).

On the evening of January 10 we have arranged participation in a Family Math Night at a local school. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact with students, parents and staff in a fun learning experience.

Registration is available on the conference website for School Visits and the Family Math Night. And you can go back and add to your registration any time.

Cultural Activities and Tourist Attractions

A highlight of winter in Ottawa is skating on the Rideau Canal. We are hoping the canal will be frozen by the start of the Conference and have planned on January 11 to go skating at Dow?s Lake which leads to the canal. Dow?s Lake is approximately a 10-minute ride from the hotel. Skates and sleighs can be rented at Dow?s Lake and we will have volunteers to help the novices. Participants may stay at Dow?s Lake or venture down the canal. There are huts along the canal to rest or enjoy refreshments. We will gather back as a group to enjoy a beavertail and refreshments ? the beavertail is a yummy pastry shaped like our national animal?s tail!

If you have time, you may want to visit Parliament Hill, or any of our numerous museums. For detailed tourism information browse Ottawa Tourism?s site at

The Rideau Centre is a large shopping mall downtown with a variety of stores, restaurants and services. The ByWard Market area offers caf?s, specialty food shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs.

Ottawa is home to the Ottawa Senators Hockey Team of the National Hockey League. There are two home games during the Conference ? the Sens versus the Washington Capitals on January 7th and versus the Edmonton Oilers on January 8th. For more information visit and for tickets

Beyond Ottawa

Toronto, Niagara Falls, Quebec City and Montreal are nearby large cities you may want to extend your visit to explore. For more information visit, and Tourisme, Montr?al?s Official Tourist Guide.
